Genre Analysis and its Application in Business Letters of Offer

Abstract

As one of the recently established, debatable and yet at least defined as interdisciplinary domains in linguistics, genre analysis, which takes genre text as the analyzing focus, has moved from a surface-level description to a deep-level explanation. This thesis applies genre analysis to business letters of offer to illustrate the generic structure of them. Through the genre analysis of the data selected, the present study explores three moves of business letters of offer. Move 1 is often the starting move in business letters of offer, including general information of the addresser and greeting the addressee. Move 2 is the main part of the letter. It often contains referring to previous letter that has happened before, making an offer and illustrating the related information. Move 3 is the concluding part of the business letters of offer. This move often includes showing good will and communicative capacity of the addresser and signing the name of the addresser. The clarification of the conventions and features of this genre may help the business letters of offer users better understand the schematic structure and language features of it, and thus they may use this means of communication in business more efficiently.

摘  要

体裁分析，作为语言学中较为新兴的一个领域，使对语篇文本的分析从表层的描述发展到了更深层次多方位的解析。本篇论文将体裁分析的方法应用于商务报盘信函的研究中，以分析商务报盘信函的体裁结构。本论文通过对所选取的语料进行体裁分析，探讨得出商务报盘信函的三个语步。语步一是商务报盘信函的开始部分，包含寄信人的基本信息以及对收信人的问候。语步二是核心部分通常包含对之前信件的回顾、报盘、以及对相关信息的解释说明。语步三是商务报盘信函的结束部分。这一语步通常涉及寄信人的良好愿望或合作交流的可能性以及寄信人的签名，旨在使报盘信函的结尾合适、恰当。本论文帮助商务报盘信函的使用者能更透彻的了解商务报盘信函不同于其它体裁的图式结构和语言特征，从而在商务沟通中更有效地利用这种媒介。
